Default Accord 2003 - replacement radio display shows random characters - not usable

I am a customer -- received replacement radio / indash cd player -- plugged into faceplate-- plugged car wiring jacket in, reconnected battery, turn on switch on and get random characters on left side of screen and no radio function -- play with knobs and can get some characters on right but nothing meaningful -- can find nothing to set dip etc -- thoughts?
